Paul Tergats historical run on September 28, 2003 not only assured a place for

him in the sport history annals, but also for the real,- BERLIN MARATHON. With

now a total of five world records, the real,- BERLIN MARATHON lies at the top

of the ranking of the current city marathon races.

Kenyas Paul Tergat returned to the cross country scene today after a three-year

absence and showed the winning qualities that saw him win five consecutive

World titles on the surface in the 1990s.

The worlds fastest half marathon and marathon runner won the prestigious

Iris Lotto CrossCup - IAAF Permit - race for the third time and may now return

to the same Park of Laeken venue in March to seek a sixth individual World

Cross Country title (20-21 March 2004).

For the running year 2003 in Berlin, to our great pleasure almost all of the

races showed an increase in number of participants. Numerous event organisers

had to restrict participation to assure a smooth organisation. The enthusiasm

for running in Berlin continues-both outside of any formal organisation (just

having fun moving and the health aspects play a key role) and at the numerous

races organised in Berlin for the general public by the clubs.

Ranking of the Berlin Races 2003

The defending champion Naoko Takahashi has to worry about Olympic selection for

2004 in Athens. The Japanese marathon star had won the Olympic gold medal in

Sydney 2000 and then became the first woman to go under 2:20 in the real,-

BERLIN MARATHON in 2001 (2.19.46). She then ran again in Berlin and won in

2002. But after suffering of injury problems she had a disappointing comeback

in the Tokyo Marathon.

Kevin Allen eased into the Guinness Book of Records after Sundays Standard

Charted Singapore Marathon, but easy is perhaps not the word. Despite the 6am

start, with the first 45 minutes in the dark, the fair-haired west Londoner

suffered badly in the 30 degree heat (85+F) and 95% humidity.

But his time of 3.59.40 shattered fellow Brit Tim Rogers best for seven

marathons on seven contintents within a year. Allens cumulative time was 24hrs

21min 3sec, which betters Rogers time by over ten hours.

The theory that Kenyan long distance runners could become Nordic skiers was

tried out at the last winter Olympics, and found to be little more than a

gimmick. After John Kelais win in the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon on

Sunday, we might have a long wait for the first world class Kenyan triathlete.

Kelai is already close to being a world-class duathlete - running and

cycling - and is trying to improve his swimming, to make up the triathlon set.

But his win in his second home of Singapore...

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - World 10,000m Bronze medallist Ethiopian Sileshi Sihine

won the men’s division of today’s TOTAL Great Ethiopian in a course

record time, while the Dibaba sisters, Tirunesh and Ejigayehou, crossed the

line in that order in the womens race.

Sihine, who this year has also won gold medals in the 10,000m at the

All-African and Afro-Asian Games, beat training partner and last years champion

Gebregziabher Gebremariam, while little-known Mulugeta Wondimu was a surprise

finisher...

You can run away from the Police. Thats the philosophy that the Tanzanian

marathoners - all policemen - are bringing to bear on their race in the

Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon on Sunday morning.

The Tanzanians have a formidable line-up - Francis Robert Naali,

Commonwealth marathon champion from Manchester 2002, Simon Marshani,

Commonwealth silver medallist 1998, and Geway Suja, who has run 2hr 14min 02sec

at altitude. Marshani is an Assistant Inspector, and Naali and Suja are

sergeants....

The Las Vegas marathon is now in its 38th year and is the 17th oldest of all

continuously-held marathons in the world.

The weather is usually perfect for running with starting temperatures of

around 38 degrees F. (3 to 5 C.) and rising to 55 to 60 F. (13 to15 C.).degrees

by noontime. The air is dry and the courses are considered "very

fast" as they have a net elevation drop of 237 meters in the full marathon

It was on last Friday evening (19 Nov) when Horst Milde got one of the warmest

rounds of applause of his life for an honour which he rates as the most

valuable he has ever received at an international level.

During a reception the IAAF, which is holding its Council meeting in Berlin

For the second time in the 30-year history of the BERLIN MARATHON, the German

Agro Action (DWHH) went to the start again as a charity partner in 2003. The

real,- BERLIN MARATHON 2003 was a marathon of superlatives in many ways. Never

before were there so many runners and skaters at Germanys largest marathon as

in 2003. And never before were so many Euros “run in“ for the

drinking water project of the German Agro Action in Butajira, Ethiopia, as in

According to a message from the IAAF / DLV to the event organisers SCC RUNNING,

the results of all doping tests at the 30th real,- BERLIN MARATHON on September

27/28, 2003, were negative. The analyses (both urine and blood tests) were

carried out by the Institute for Doping Analysis and Sport Biochemistry

Kreischa.

Paul Tergats (Kenya) world record time of 2:04:55h is thus official,

Zebedayo Bayo of Tanzania won the 21st edition of the Athens Classic Marathon

on next years Olympic course, in 2hr 16min 59sec. Second and third were the

Kenyans Stephen Rugut in 2.17.06, and Elias Chebet in 2.18.22. The womens race

The Athens Marathon is one of the toughest in the world, so for anyone

fortunate enough (if thats the right expression) to get selected for the

Olympic race next year, or brave enough to attempt the original marathon

course, listen to Nikos Polias, for he knows of which he speaks. "You have

to start slowly," says Polias, who has won the Marathon to Athens race six

times in ten starts. "Because you still need to be alive when you get to

30 kilometres". The reason for that is that the course rises...

With strong late race surges, Kenyan Evans Rutto and Svetlana Zakharova of

Russia burst to convincing wins in the 26th LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon on

Sunday (12 October).

In his stunning first appearance over the distance, the 25 year-old Rutto

broke from a seven-man pack in the 19th mile to win in 2:05:50, placing himself

firmly among the four fastest marathoners of all time, with the fastest-ever

marathon debut.

His effort easily bettered Wilson Onsares debut record of 2:06:47 from

The police are looking for eye-witnesses of an accident that occurred during

the skater marathon on Saturday, September 27. At around 5 p.m., a 63-year-old

man from Berlin-Lichterfelde was watching the race on the side of the course in

Lentzdallee in Zehlendorf, ca. 200 metres before the round-about “Wilder

Eber“. A skater suddenly pulled out of a group, leaving the street, and

ran into him. The 63 year old suffered a triple fracture of his knee bone.

After a closely run race, Martin Lel won the final sprint to snatch individual

gold for Kenya in the men’s race in Vilamoura this morning, while a gutsy

run from John Yuda won Tanzania its first ever team gold in the World Half

Marathon Championships.

For much of the 21 kilometres of this World Half Marathon Championships, the

race had had been dominated by a tightly bunched lead pack of ten athletes,

with the East Africa nations of Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania contesting both

On Saturday, (September 27, 2003,) 9,612 inline skaters started off an

unbelievable sporting weekend in the German capital. The signs of the times

were recognised, and the organisational crew around Horst and Mark Milde made

an independent MARATHON race come true for the inline skaters within the

framework of the 30th real,- BERLIN MARATHON. Optimal conditions greeted not

only the 150 best skaters in the world, but also accompanied the record number

of almost 10,000 skaters on their sightseeing...

“This marathon has made history“, Paul Tergat said after running a

spectacular new world record in the 30th real,- BERLIN MARATHON. The Kenyan

crossed the finish line of the new course at Brandenburg Gate in 2:04:55 and

Dear runners and organisers, that was truly superb!

I want to congratulate on a great 30th real,- BERLIN MARATHON. Sadly I was

not able to witness this festival of running live. But I got information in the

US and kept my fingers crossed for all participants and organisers.

I was especially happy for Paul Tergat that he was able to crown the jubilee

with such a stunning world record. The real,- BERLIN MARATHON has an absolutely

thrilling atmosphere, which I was able to experience as a runner...

Paul Tergat of Kenya made a quantum leap in marathon running when he clocked

the first sub-2.05 in history, winning in Berlin this morning in 2.04.55. That

takes all of 43 seconds off American Khalid Khannouchi's previous record of

2.05.38, set in London 2002, when Tergat was second in 2.05.48.

Paced by half a dozen compatriots, on a perfect day with temperatures

ranging between 9 and 12 degrees centigrade, the 34 year old Kenyan was always

The biggest inline-skate marathon in Europe is underway : 9,612 competitors set

off in the shadow of the Brandenburg Gate in their quest to break the hour in

Berlin. Conditions were good with little wind, sunny but under 20 degrees

The story of the BERLIN MARATHON is a story of the development of road running.

When the first BERLIN MARATHON was started on 13th October 1974 on a minor road

next to the stadium of the organisers‘ club SC Charlottenburg Berlin 286

athletes had entered. 244 runners finished. The first winners were two runners

from Berlin: Günter Hallas (2:44:53), who still runs the BERLIN MARATHON

today, and Jutta von Haase (3:22:01).

talent. Particularly because there was no limit on the number of athletes

representing each nation, the United States contingent was logically the

The member of the BERLIN MARATHON Jubilee Club have their traditional green

“permanent“ race numbers (starting at number 201).

For those uninformed: you have to have successfully made it to the finish of

the BERLIN MARATHON 10 times to get into this exclusive circle. This year they

will receive an extra race number for the back: the number has the club logo,

the members name, and the number of races successfully completed. Then they can

be cheered on “from behind“, as well.

It was just 50 minutes before the scheduled start of the women’s 1500m

final in the Stade de France when the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyib

Erdogan flew into Paris. He was then driven to the stadium and watched

Süreyya Ayhan’s race, in which she finished second.

The runner is Turkey’s number one sports person since she won the 1500

Welthungerhilfe) will be at the start on September 27 + 28, 2003, as the

the event organiser SCC-RUNNING is to help people in Iraq and in the running

There was good news on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. for the organising team of

SCC-RUNNING. The course of the 30th real,- BERLIN-MARATHON has been measured,

and it is correct, almost to the metre: 42,195 km.

will take place on September 27-28, 2003. The organisers from SCC-RUNNING have

set the limit for this spectacular anniversary year marathon to 35,000 runners.

With over 34,000 participants from over 80 countries already registered, this

limit has almost been met--already surpassing last years record total of

32,752.

Karolina Szabos 30,000 metres track world record was one of the oldest in

athletics. The Hungarian had run 1:47:05,6 in Budapest on 22nd April 1988. Now

it is beaten after 15 years: At a meeting in Warstein Tegla Loroupe ran 1:45:50

for the distance, achieving her goal to run the sixth world record of her

of the AVON Womens Run from the participants themselves:

With 10,528 runners (5,135 for the 5 km race, 4,704 for the 10 km, and 689

Bambinis) from 44 countries, the Berlin event broke the barrier of 10,000 for

the first time. About 18,000 spectators lined the start and finish, and the

runners were motivated by rows of applauding spectators (husbands, children,

During the recent years, Vattenfall has grown from being a Swedish energy

For a second time within two years Berlin will be a candidate for the IAAF

World Championships in Athletics. After loosing unluckily against Helsinki in

the race for the championships in 2005 this time the German capital will apply

for the championships in 2009. Berlin is the first city to become a candidate

for 2009, but the IAAF expects further cities to express their interest. The

championships in 2007 will be held in Osaka.

This coming Saturday, May 10, 2003, marks the end of reduced fee registration

for runners, power walkers, wheelchair athletes and inline skaters for the

anniversary marathon on September 27-28, 2003. Participants can still register

for the low fee of € 50.00 with SCC-RUNNING –also online—for

the double event on Saturday and Sunday. After May 10th, the registration fee

will go up to € 70.00. To date, the organisers have received well over

Four weeks earlier Kenyans dominated the Bewag BERLIN HALF MARATHON. Now they

have come back to Berlin to take the first few places in another major road

race. Jason Mbote and Caroline Kwambai won the ,25 km von Berlin. That meant of

end. The Kenyan had won the 25 k race in 2001 and 2002. And she also triumphed

Breslau (Wroclaw), a city with an over 1000-year history and unique

architecture from many epochs, has a lot to offer, not only for those

interested in running, Breslau is easy to reach from Berlin—just 4 or 5

hours on the highway.

The centre and heart of the city is the market square. By May 6, 1945, the

“Citadel Breslau“ was almost completely destroyed, but the Polish

restorers successfully restored it, and with the bourgeois houses at Ring/Rynek

at the historical city...

Never have there been so many entries for the Olympus Hamburg Marathon, which

is Germanys number two behind the real,- BERLIN MARATHON. 21,551 runners plus

2,000 skaters were accepted. But very bad weather during the night before the

race was probably a reason for many not to turn up. So only 16,300 starters

were counted. But still the two winners – Julio Rey (Spain) and Hellen

Kimutai (Kenya) – made it a very successful day for the organisers.

Road running gets more and more popular in Germany....

There are still over five months until the 30th real.- BERLIN-MARATHON on

September 27+28, 2003, but the organisers from SCC-RUNNING can already

celebrate an unexpected onslaught of registrations.

With already 32,186 registrations (25,837 runners and 6,349 inline skaters)

from 76 countries, there are almost 10,000 more participants registered at this

time than at the same time last year.

The Kenyans were slowed by the worst sort of “April Weather“ as it

is called in Germany – but still there was no way stopping them on their

way to yet another great triumph on Berlins roads. The Bewag BERLIN HALF

MARATHON seems to be their race.

Last year they took a record first 13 places, this time they took the first

eight. Though also the sun was shining for short times it seemed to be much

harder for the Kenyans to fight against winds, snow showers and even hail than

against other runners....

This years Bewag BERLIN HALF MARATHON will once again be Germanys big season

opener. Running gets more and more popular in Germany – and this is also

proved by the development of the by far biggest half marathon in this country.

With altogether probably around 17,500 starters the 23rd edition of this

On September 28, 1975 at the 2nd BERLIN PEOPLES MARATHON, as the real,-

BERLIN-MARATHON was still called in the first two years, there was a very

unusual constellation of winners.

The winner of the womens race was named Bochröder—and the winner

of the mens race was a Bochröder, as well....

Members of the Berlin Philharmonics have often participated successfully in

the BERLIN-MARATHON, including some with very fast times. That cannot only be

due to the fact, that the course of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON directly passes

by the Philharmonie! The organisers of the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON are even more

so pleased that the “MARATHON“ has now officially found its place

in classical music. We recommend a visit to our musical

“colleagues“.

It may sound a bit more athletic than it really is....

On Sunday, April 6, “smiling“ is called for from the participants

at the finish of the 23rd Bewag BERLIN HALF MARATHON on Alexanderstraße.

The participants will be greeted at the finish by a photographer, who will

take pictures of the happy faces as they cross the finish line. SCC RUNNING,

the organiser, already has reason to “smile“, for there are already

13,874 participants registered for the spring classic half marathon race

newest issue, January/April 2003, the dates for 120 races in 25 countries are

listed for the period until April 2004.

regret that London Marathon Limited has learnt of the death of Chris Brasher

CBE, President of London Marathon Limited. Chris Brasher, who died at the age

of 74 after an illness, was the co-founder of the first London Marathon in 1981

and it is to his unflagging energy and enthusiasm that the event owes its

success.

Five weeks before the 23rd Bewag BERLIN HALF MARATHON on April 6, 2003, the

Since its beginning, the BERLIN-MARATHON has had a special affinity to the

Olympic champions in the marathon. From 1974 – 1977, the BERLIN-MARATHON

medals were adorned with running figures from the antiquities. Since 1978, the

merits are thus remembered and saved for posterity in the medals. They are

2002 in 2:25:35) moved to eighth on the world all-time list to win a great

womens marathon in Osaka. In second place Masako Chiba improved from 2:25:11

a time bettered only by Paula Radcliffe for a womens marathon debut. In fourth

reg-istration for skaters for the Inline Skate Marathon Berlin 2003 was opened.

The first registration for the inline competition 2003 was received by the
