Derartu Tulu won the Hydro Active Women’s Challenge
in Hyde Park, London, outkicking Susan Chepkemei in the
final stages of the five kilometres race. Ethiopia's double Olympic
10,000m champion, piling on
the pressure in the final 400 metres, crossed the line in 15:30 minutes
, beating her Kenyan rival by five seconds. New Zealand’s Kim Smith –
recent winner of the World
University Games 5,000m track title – was third in 15:50 minutes , more
than 30 seconds ahead of the first Briton, Julia Bleasdale.
The winning time was some way slower than Paula
Radcliffe’s 2003 world record of 14:51 minutes which she shares with
Tirunesh Dibaba, but Tulu the latter star's cousin,
