Jan Fitschen had a successful season’s debut. The long distance runner from TV Wattenscheid won the 3,000 metres in convincing style on day one of the German Indoor Championships in Sindelfingen. After suffering from injuries for a longer period Fitschen clocked 7:55,99 minutes. He thus missed the national qualifying time for the European Indoor Championships which will take place in Madrid in a fortnight by less than six seconds. Filmon Ghirmai took second place in 8:08,48 minutes, Sebastian Hallmann was third in 8:09,03.
In contrast to Jan Fitschen Sabrina Mockenhaupt had booked her ticket to Madrid before the championships. With 8:48,57 minutes she is the fastest German 3,000 m runner of the season. The quialification time for Madrid is 8:55,00. It is her aim to show a good race in the final in Madrid. In Sindelfingen there was no danger for Sabrina Mockenhaupt. She took the title in 9:29,59 minutes.
