That is the topic of the 2nd INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS FOR ENDURANCE AND SPORT
MEDICINE which will be taking place from September 23-25 in Berlin.
The increasing lack of activity and the growing number of overweight people
with adipositas have far-reaching consequences for individual health and for
the health system as a whole. At the same time, numerous international studies
show that exercise can serve as a primary preventive measure or ancillary
therapy for almost all illnesses. In light of this background, sport medicine
is growing in importance.
Those involved in sport medicine are more than ever thus indispensable for
the moderation and transfer of knowledge. Lectures and workshops in the areas
of internal medicine, orthopaedics, and nutritional science will serve to
further this development.
A few of the main topics will be, for instance, sudden cardiac arrest,
diabetes, over-exertion syndrome, as well as oxidative stress and physical
training.
In lieu of a pending regulation on preventive medicine, there will be a
podium discussion on Friday, September 24, 2004, from 5-6:30 p.m. on the topic:
"Prevention: Possibilities and
Limitations".
Renowned experts will be discussing the change in paradigms in health care
policy from the singular treatment of illnesses to the support of preventive
health care from various perspectives.
Dr. Claus Theo Schröder, State Secretary in the Ministry of
Heath and Prof. Dr. Hans-Hermann Dickhuth, president of the German Society for
Sport Medicine and Prevention
, as well as other leading representatives from health care insurance agencies
and from the areas of diagnostic and pharmo therapy will be participating in
the round of discussion.
The event which is taking place within the framework of the 31st real,-
BERLIN-MARATHON stands under the patronage of the Industrie- und Handelskammer
Berlin (Berlin Chamber of Industry and Trade).
The primary supporter of the event is the research and medical
company Pfizer, with additional support from Berlin-Chemie, Takeda Pharma,
