A new record number of participants is again expected at the by far largest
women’s race in Germany, on this Saturday, May 22, in the Tiergarten
Park. So far, already 9,986 women and girls have signed up for the 21st AVON
RUNNING Berlin Women’s Run. This means an estimated 11,000 runners and
walkers can be expected. Last year it was exactly 10,528. In 2003, the 10,000
barrier was broken for the first time.
Traditionally, the runners can chose between two distances at the AVON
RUNNING Berlin Women’s Run: 5 km and 10 km. This year, a new discipline
is on the programme of the AVON RUNNING Berlin Women’s Run. Nordic
walking will be integrated into the race. Walkers and Nordic walkers will have
their own 10 km race for the first time. Alternatively, they can also
participate in the 5 km race. This year schoolgirls will again make up a large
portion of the starting field of this shorter race. The racing programme is
rounded off with a ca. 800m Bambini Run for children born in 1994 and
later.
From an athletic standpoint, the 10km race will be the highlight. Among
others, two top German women runners will be at the start: Kathrin Weßel
(SCC Berlin) and Claudia Dreher (Gänsefurther Sportbewegung). Kathrin
Weßel, the once world-class long distance track runner, was the German
champion in the marathon in 2003. At the 1999 World Championships, Claudia
Dreher ran to 9th place in the marathon. "It is always a special
motivation for me to run in the AVON RUNNING Berlin Women’s Run. This
race has gone through a phenomenal development, and the atmosphere is
great,“ says Kathrin Weßel, who came in second in last year’s
AVON RUNNING Berlin Women’s Run.
It is worth it in many respects to participate in the AVON RUNNING Berlin
Women’s Run. Every participant will receive a medal, a certificate,
presents from AVON and the event t-shirt from adidas. Only the girls registered
through their schools will not receive a t-shirt.
Late registration is still possible. Whoever would like to participate can
register on Wednesday or Friday at Karstadt Sport in Joachimstaler Straße
5 – 6. That is only true, however, until the limit of 11,500 walkers and
runners has not yet been reached. Children can be registered for the Bambini
Run on Saturday in the starting area. The supporting programme will begin at 2
p.m.
