The BERLIN-MARATHON - these words resound
wonderfully not only in the ears of the athletes and running fans; a wide
audience extending well beyond these groups is also excited about and looking
forward to this outstanding international sporting event.
As patron of the event, I therefore do not see much need to advertise for the 2003 BERLIN-MARATHON and its individual competitions. The dates of the Marathon, 27 and 28 September, have surely already been marked down in the calendars of all those interested in it. However I do want to congratulate and extend my warm thanks to everyone involved. For the BERLIN-MARATHON is this year celebrating its 30th anniversary. It is impressive how much has been accomplished in this period of time - and how much is continuing to be accomplished - by all those responsible for the event and the many volunteer helpers. Not only has there been a notable increase in the number of participants and spectators, the Marathons overall organization, course and services have been continuously optimized. Today, running the 42,195 metres has also become a tourist attraction because runners pass many of the German capitals landmarks on the way. I know that the preparations for this 30th anniversary BERLIN-MARATHON are in full gear and would like to wish the team responsible for organizing the event continued good luck and much success. Yours sincerely
