Daniel Ebenyo
Daniel Ebenyo is the man who has been in better form than any of his rivals at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON for over a year now. The 28-year-old is certainly one of the most interesting and promising road runners in Kenya at the moment.
In February 2023, Daniel Ebenyo finished in a remarkable sixth place at the extremely competitive World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst (Australia). After winning the Istanbul Half Marathon, he went on to win the silver medal in the 10,000 m at the World Championships in Budapest in the summer. A few weeks later, he won the 10,000 m race at the athletics meeting in Brussels.
This was followed by winning the silver medal at the World Half Marathon Championships in Riga (Latvia). Daniel Ebenyo caused a curiosity in the process. In the lead, the Kenyan was overtaken by his compatriot Sabastian Sawe in the final phase of the race - the winner of the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON 2023 then won the gold medal ahead of Ebenyo. At the moment he was overtaken by Sawe, he saluted his rival. Because of this gesture at a World Championships, Daniel Ebenyo was nominated for the Fair Play Award, which is presented annually by the international athletics federation World Athletics. However, he did not win the award.
After the World Half Marathon Championships, Daniel Ebenyo won the following races: The half marathon in New Delhi, the 25-km race in Kolkata (where he ran a world best time of 1:11:13) and two cross-country races earlier this year.
Growing up in Baragoi, a high-altitude area in northern Kenya, Daniel Ebenyo had to walk 24 kilometres to and from school every day. Some of the route is said to have led through dangerous areas (gang crime).
