Samuel Fitwi

Samuel Fitwi

Samuel Fitwi made a breakthrough at the Dubai Marathon in January 2024. After improving his time to 2:08:28 in Berlin last September, but narrowly missing the Olympic standard, he ran to a very strong fifth place in the high-calibre race in the United Arab Emirates. Samuel Fitwi took advantage of the super-fast course in Dubai, improving his time to 2:06:27 and becoming the second-fastest German marathon runner of all time. Samuel Fitwi will be competing at the Olympic Games as a result of this performance.

In preparation for the Olympic marathon in Paris, Samuel Fitwi wants to take part in the European Half Marathon Championships in Rome in June. However, he still lacks the standard for this, which is 61:40 minutes. Samuel Fitwi now wants to run this time at the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON, having already achieved his current best time of 61:44 at the race a year ago.

The 28-year-old initially ran mainly on the long-distance track and competed in cross-country races. In 2019, he finished fifth at the European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon. In recent years, Samuel Fitwi has focussed more on road running. In February 2021, he ran a German best time of 13:32 minutes over 5 km in Monaco, which has since been beaten.

Samuel Fitwi fled Eritrea as a 17-year-old under adventurous circumstances. He travelled across the Mediterranean to Italy and finally to Cologne. He now lives in Gerolstein (Rhineland-Palatinate). During the early years of his career, Samuel Fitwi also worked as a painter. He has held German citizenship since 2018.
