Miriam Dattke

Miriam Dattke

Miriam Dattke ran her best race to date at the 2022 European Athletics Championships in Munich: She surprised everyone with a strong fourth place in the marathon. She narrowly missed out on the bronze medal, finishing at the same time as the third-placed runner and was the only German runner to be in contention for a medal. She won the integrated Marathon Europe Cup classification with the German team at the European Championships.

Miriam Dattke, who is studying International Management, is originally from Berlin. However, she didn't really get on in her hometown in terms of sport. After graduating from high school, Miriam Dattke moved to Regensburg in 2017, having previously joined coach Kurt Ring and LG Telis Finanz Regensburg. For many years, her performance curve pointed upwards again.

After Miriam Dattke improved her time to 69:43 minutes over the half marathon distance during the coronavirus lockdown in November 2020 at an all-elite race in Dresden, she wanted to run her marathon debut in Dresden in spring 2021. Qualifying for the Olympics was her goal straight away. With a strong 10 km best time of 31:38 in Berlin at the beginning of March, she seemed to be on the right track. However, a muscle injury stopped her at short notice and she was unable to run the marathon in Dresden. This also meant that her Olympic chance was gone. She finally made her marathon debut in Valencia in December 2021, but was unlucky again: stomach problems forced her to retire after around 34 km. Miriam Dattke then finished on her third attempt: she ran a time of 2:26:50 in Seville in February 2022, followed by a convincing race at the European Championships in Munich.

Her second attempt to qualify for the Olympics in the marathon also failed. Miriam Dattke had been preparing for the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON 2023 for a very long time, but was unable to compete due to illness. She then ran briefly in Frankfurt at the end of October, but her form was not good enough for a fast enough time (she ran 2:28:12). She did not finish in another attempt in Dubai at the beginning of January.

At the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON, Miriam Dattke could qualify for the European Half Marathon Championships in Rome in June. Irrespective of this, she has now decided to leave her long-time coach Kurt Ring to join a professional running team in the USA. She will initially be coached in the USA by Irishman Mark Carroll.
