Esther Pfeiffer - the wife of marathon runner Hendrik Pfeiffer, who was still called Esther Jacobitz last year - has pushed herself into the extended German elite over the half marathon distance this winter. Surprisingly, she finished fifth in Seville in 70:24 minutes, beating the standard for the European Championships by six seconds. She managed a significant improvement of 2:29 minutes.
The half marathon distance is by far Esther Pfeiffer's strongest discipline to date, having initially run on the track over 800 and 1,500 metres. Last year, she competed in a marathon for the first time. In Cologne, she won straight away in 2:37:00 hours, although there was no significant national or international competition. Prior to that, the psychology student had finished twelfth in the half marathon at the World Student Championships in Chengdu (China) in 1:16:28 hours.
Around two years ago, Hendrik Pfeiffer took on the role of coach. The runner couple, who live in Hanover, are also advised by coach Timo Kuhlmann. At the GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON, Esther Pfeiffer wants to run in such a way that her result gives her a good chance of starting at the European Championships in Rome. It would be her first major international championship start. The athlete would also like to improve her time to under 70:00 minutes over the course of the year.
Her talent for running was discovered in kindergarten: "My teacher recommended athletics to me back then, as I never got caught playing tag," says Esther Pfeiffer.
